Every Child Deserves The Chance For A Healthy Life!

What is R.A.D.?

Most people are not familiar with the term RAD or its devastating effects. Many cases stem from child neglect/ abuse, exposure to illegal drugs and alcohol as an infant or in-utero, divorce, loss of a parent, or any other tragic reason an infant will not have a chance to properly bond with their primary care giver.

More specifically, Reactive Attachment Disorder (RAD) is most common in foster and adopted children but can be found in many other so-called "normal" families. Reactive Attachment Disorder (RAD) develops when a child is not properly nurtured in the first few months and years of life. It is caused by early chronic maltreatment such as neglect, abuse, or institutional care. The child, left to cry in hunger, pain or need for cuddling, learns that adults will not help. If the child’s parent(s) are drug addicted, that child learned their parent(s) are more involved in getting their next drug fix than they are in nurturing the developing child, and learns that the child’s needs are not primary to the caregivers. Children born of drug or alcohol addicted parents learn even in the womb that things do not feel good and are not safe for them.

In severe cases, where the child was an abuse or violence victim, the child learns adults are hurtful and cannot be trusted. The child with RAD may develop approaches or “working models” of the world to keep the child safe. The child may try to control a world the child experiences as dangerous, if not controlled by the child. Without therapy child with RAD may not develop the attachments to other human beings which allow them to trust, accept discipline, develop cause and effect thinking, self-control and responsibility.

Louis' Story

Rarely home, Louis’ father Jim worked multiple jobs to support his young family. Quite unfortunately, Louis’ mother kept her preoccupation with drugs and her lack of proper mothering to her infant son a well guarded secret from everyone...including her husband.  Little by little, Jim began to notice things weren’t quite right. Soon after that, his suspicions were confirmed and he picked up his child and left, in search of safety and help for Louis.

photoJim say’s, “What’s wrong with Louis is partly my fault…I was oblivious to any serious problems for a long time…I wish I’d have known sooner”.

Hindsight is said to be 20-20, but Jim did the right thing as soon as he knew there was a problem. The past can't be changed, but there's always hope for the future! That's why this website and the desire to spread awareness about RAD...as well as raising funds for Louis' treatment.
